The shooting happened after a call from an ex-marine (possibly suffering from PTSD) to 911 reporting a man with an assault rifle he loaded and was pointing at customers.
Here is the side of the story from the victim John Crawford's mother's perspective:
“We was just talking. He said he was at the video games playing videos and he went over there by the toy section where the toy guns were. And the next thing I know, he said ‘It’s not real,’ and the police start shooting and they said ‘Get on the ground,’ but he was already on the ground because they had shot him,” Johnson stated. “And I could hear him just crying and screaming. I feel like they shot him down like he was not even human.”
The innocent bystander was Angela D. Williams, a mother of two who was to be wed next week. She died of a heart attack when trying to escape the gunfire. Judging from her picture she did not seem to be in great shape and smoked cigarettes, not the optimum lifestyle for fleeing gunfire on short notice.
The article sourced above on Angela's death has no sympathy in the comments for the police who escalated this situation.
Of course the police say they did exactly what they were supposed to and an investigation will take months. They have not even confirmed if it was a BB gun. If they would just release the security video and audio the public could make their own conclusions.
Certainly the narrative according to the mother is similar to the witnesses of victim Michael Brown's deadly encounter with police in Ferguson, OH. A new witness has come forward reinforcing the version, likely the truth, that Brown was shot with his hands in the air, "New witness in Michael Brown shooting says teenager had his hands UP when he was gunned down and disputes that he charged Officer Wilson."
Anyone who has been subject to disputing the perverted version of reality in a police report can clearly see beneath the scummy surface portrayal of justice being "served."
